Black Diamond was founded in 1957 by Yvon Chouinard, who made pitons by hand in his garden and sold them from the back of his car in Yosemite Valley. Chouinard’s pitons quickly gained a reputation for quality, and Chouinard Equipment was born soon afterwards in Ventura, California. As Black Diamond, the company now serves hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts around the world.
